Medicare Part B: Uncover the Benefits You NEED to Know! Medicare Part B Benefits Guide!

Making the Most of Your Medicare Part B Benefits

Everyone aims to maximize their insurance benefits, and if you’re preparing to transition to Medicare, you should be no different. This post aims to help you fully comprehend and utilize the benefits available under Medicare Part B, so that you can make the most of your medical coverage. Before detailing the various services covered by Medicare Part B, it’s essential to understand the basic structure of Original Medicare.

Original Medicare is divided into two segments: Part A and Part B. Part A primarily pertains to inpatient related coverage, typically provided in a hospital or a skilled nursing setting. On the other hand, Part B covers outpatient services or treatments deemed ‘medically necessary’.

Remember: Anytime Part A or Part B covers you, it must be for something that’s medically necessary.

Services Covered by Medicare Part B

Part B of Medicare covers a vast array of services. Here are some of them:

  • Lab Work and Scans: Whenever you visit a healthcare facility for blood work, an x-ray, or a scan such as an MRI, PET, or CAT scan, the costs are covered by Medicare Part B.
  • Outpatient Surgery: If you have surgery in an ambulatory surgical center—where you’re admitted for less than 24 hours—the costs are covered under Part B. This includes common surgeries like knee replacements, cataract surgery, gallbladder removals, and hernia operations.
  • Physician Services: Irrespective of whether you’re an inpatient or outpatient, all physician services fall under Medicare Part B. This includes fees for doctors and specialists that work both inside and outside hospitals, ER doctors, and hospitalists.
  • Durable Medical Equipment (DME): DME encompasses hundreds of items like CPAP machines, oxygen equipment, wheelchairs, walkers, and home hospital beds.
  • Preventive Services & Vaccinations: During your first twelve months on Medicare, you are entitled to a ‘Welcome to Medicare’ wellness visit. This is an evaluation by doctors to ensure you’re set up properly upon joining Medicare. After the first twelve months, you become eligible for annual wellness checkups. Additionally, Medicare Part B also covers immunizations – flu shots, hepatitis B, pneumonia, and even COVID-19 vaccines. As of January 2023, other vaccinations, including shingles, have also been included.
  • Clinical Research Studies: If Medicare approves a new medication or procedure, it will cover costs as part of a research study, testing their effectiveness in treating diseases.
  • Ambulance Services: Should you ever require an ambulance or air ambulance for medical transportation, Part B will cover the costs.
  • Certain Medications: Certain drugs administered via durable medical equipment, infusion medication administered in outpatient facilities, and some cancer treatment medications are also covered by Part B.

Cost Implications of Medicare Part B

Understanding the costs associated with Medicare Part B is crucial. Preventive services, including immunizations and diagnostic tests, are covered 100% by Medicare Part B, meaning you have zero cost sharing involved.

For the rest of the services, once you’ve met the annual deductible of $283, Medicare Part B covers 80%, with patients responsible for the remaining 20% coinsurance. The 20% coinsurance has no limit to its extent, potentially exposing you to large out-of-pocket expenses, especially in case of serious illnesses.

To mitigate this risk, most people opt for a Medicare Supplemental Plan, often Plan G or Plan N, to fully cover the 20% coinsurance.

Lastly, enrolling in Medicare Part B incurs a monthly cost, currently set at $202.90. If you’re income breeches a certain threshold, this premium can have an added surcharge known as an Income Related Monthly Adjusted Amount (IRMAA). If your income is below $109,000 as a single filer or $218,000 as a joint filer, you’ll pay $202.90. Above these income thresholds, you’ll pay more.
